What a Finish

There’s just no other way to express what I’m thinking right now: Mark Martin was robbed.

This was NASCAR’s official statement (Ramsey Poston):

“When the 07 got sideways on track, the yellow came out at that time. The 29 was ahead of the 01 at that time and declared the winner taking the checkered flag.”

He also stated that the cars involved in the wreck were “already off the track and on the apron.” Maybe they weren’t watching the same race I was; because the 07 was on sliding on its roof when the leaders crossed the line.

Officials were quick to throw caution flags for minor incidents during the afternoon, but failed to act after several cars disappeared into a cloud of smoke and Clint Bowyer was left sliding on his roof. And all of this despite the years of preaching about freezing the field for safety and no more racing back to the caution. NASCAR really needs to start drinking their own Kool-Aid; in any other lap of this race, or in the final lap of any other race they would have thrown that flag immediately. Consistency anyone?

I realize that they can’t just take the victory from Harvick and award it to Martin now, but I sure would like to see someone in the organization hit with an “actions detrimental to the sport” penalty. Say… $100,000 and 100 brownie points? Oh yeah — something needs to be done about the NASCAR.com website. It’s so flash and graphics intensive that us poor rednecks out here in the boonies with dial-up can’t use it. Not to mention the fact that I can’t get it to work with Firefox.

By the way — more than one quarter of the race broadcast was eaten up by commercials.
