What a Beautiful Evening
I’ve got the house to myself tonight — John is at a friend’s house for the evening. As I type this, I’m sitting on the front porch with a glass of wine, watching the sun slowly sink behind the mountains. It’s a beautiful evening — there’s a nice breeze and the clouds are glowing pink.
I’ve been watching a Red-Headed Woodpecker lazily fly from tree to tree. It’s been hanging around the yard lately so they must have a nest here somewhere. A chipmunk and Blue Jay have been fighting over the Squirrel Snax (a compacted corn kernel bar). A White-Breasted Nuthatch was feeding on a sunflower bar right in front of me just a couple of minutes ago. Lots of birds singing although I can’t identify them all by sound yet.
I saw a couple of female Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds out last night. One was enjoying my feeder, the other some red blossoms in the planter out front. I was hoping they’d come back this evening, but I haven’t seen them yet. They’re amazing! I read somewhere that their hearts beat over 1200 times per minute!
As much as the commute to and from work really sucks, I wouldn’t trade evenings like this for anything else in the world.
