And Who Signs Your Paycheck?
“To think that you’re going to intimidate a senator or any senator into voting one way or the other by gorging your phones with phone calls most of whom don’t even know where Gulfport, Miss., is is not an effective tactic. But it’s their right to do that.” –Trent Lott on the immigration bill backlash
The last time I checked, this nation was designed with a government by the people, for the people and of the people. It’s a republic. We vote for people who should be representing us and our interests. That Trent Lott has so much disdain for the people he was elected to represent* is sad. Very sad. How else would you like for people to express their wishes to you, Mr. Lott? Pony Express? Telegram? If your phone lines are jammed with people calling to oppose the immigration bill, maybe you should actually think about what they’re saying.
Every Senator who has not read the bill in its entirely, but votes on it anyway, should be recalled. The bill is a pile of crap. You’re all being paid entirely too well to be voting without doing your homework. We don’t need a guest worker program. We already have a plethora of them that allow in thousands of foreign workers every year. What we do need is for the government to actually enforce the laws that are already on the books.
* Yes, I know that he’s a Senator, and that the Senate was designed to represent the States, not the people. But the states gave up their representation when they turned the election of Senators over to popular vote instead of determining them in their legislatures. What’s done is done — now the whole Congress (opposite of progress?!) should be representing the will of the people. Isn’t it about time we start holding their feet to the fire?
