A Kodak Moment
John took me flying last night. It was the first time I’d ever been up after dark. We took off from KFDK and headed for Winchester. He turned on the runway lights so that I could see the field. We headed south toward Front Royal before turning to the west. The world below us was enveloped in dark, but there was still some light at 5500 feet. From the air, the moon seems as bright as the sun. I saw its very bright reflection in the rivers as we flew over them. In front of us I could see the dark horizon and the orange evidence of some remaining sunlight. The orange gave way to a brilliant blue. And the first star — a very bright one — shone somewhere in the middle.
It was a Kodak moment, if ever there was one. I wanted to take it home with me; but alas, no camera this time.
We turned to the east and the airport and managed to cross the paths of some heavies that were on approach to Dulles. It was an interesting experience. At one point, one of them flew directly over us, with only 1000 vertical feet in between. We flew over the Clearview airport and saw Baltimore from a distance before heading for the pattern. It was a beautiful evening and the air was exceedingly smooth. Not a bad combo for my first night flight.
