Lazy Sunday Morning

John and I played hooky from church this morning. We had breakfast at the Airport Inn (Frederick Municipal Airport) and did a lot of talking. If you haven’t eaten at the Airport Inn, you should. Just about everything we’ve had there is excellent. This morning we had the Chef’s Egg Chesapeake — canadian bacon, two crab cake and hollandaise sauce on top of two toasted english muffin halves served with asparagus and home fries. Well, mine was more like just a Chesapeake since I detest eggs. It was delightful. We chatted back and forth with some fellow EAA members who were there as we ate.

Partway through the meal, the AOPA jet landed and taxied up to the terminal. Not more than 5 minutes later, in pops Phil Boyer with his wife for breakfast. He sat one table over from us. I’m not into “celebrity”-worship or anything, but it was sort of cool to be eating 10 feet from the man at the helm of the AOPA (Airplane Owers and Pilots Association, for those who don’t know) — he popped into a hole-in-the-wall airport restaurant that we know and love, and ate with the little people. Of course, KFDK is the home base of the AOPA so I’m sure he’s eaten there a million times. But it was still sort of neat. He looked and sounded just like he did in “One Six Right“.

Another cool piece of trivia that I didn’t know: the tail number of the AOPA corporate jet is N4GA. The N is required by the FAA, but the rest stands for “For General Aviation.” Anyone reading this who actually has their pilot certificate (this means you too, John) is probably laughing at me right now. But seriously, I had no idea and I think it’s nifty.

If you’ve never seen, much less heard of “One Six Right”, rent it or spend the $20 to buy it. It’s a great movie about the history of aviation and specifically the Van Nuys Airport, and full of spectacular music and flying footage. It will move you, even if you aren’t a flying enthusiast. You can read more about this ground breaking movie here.
