Maryland: The Most Liberal State in the Union

The whole country is abuzz over Elliot Spitzer’s plan to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens. But Maryland is ahead of the curve. Not content to merely offer government identification to the criminals who cross our border, Maryland now not only hands out drivers licenses like candy but has special office hours for those who are here illegally. CASA, a pro-illegal-immigrant group, holds seminars and offers tips on how to navigate the system (You need to know your address by heart,” he says. “People fail when they are asked to give an address. When they ask, ‘Where do you live?’ it is as if they have thrown cold water on them.” He patiently explains that a complete address must include the city, state and ZIP code.“) Illegal aliens who can’t lawfully get licenses in Virginia and D.C. stream across the state line to get them here. And Maryland welcomes them.

But where was the outrage when the special office hours debuted last year? Hopefully Spitzer’s juggernaut will shine some light on the precarious situation here in Maryland. Thanks to our super-de-dooper liberal caretakers who like handing out government identification to people who shouldn’t be here in the first place, I will no longer be able to use my drivers license at the airport starting in May 2008. That’s right…. I, a legal U.S. citizen will now have to show a passport to travel in my own country. If you live in Maryland, you will too — don’t know what the REAL ID Act is? Maybe you should read up on it. Where’s the outrage? The media expose? The marching in the streets? There won’t be any — because Maryland is the most liberal state in the union. People have come to expect crazy from Maryland.

Maryland Democrats are fighting efforts to require identification in order to vote. They are calling it a poll tax and saying that it discriminates against the poor. If even illegal aliens can get identification, and you have to have identification in order to apply for welfare benefits, cash a check or *shock* drive, how is it discriminating against anyone? Why on earth wouldn’t we protect our most sacred of rights by requiring you to prove that you really are the person whose name you just gave at the polls? If you can’t afford the $35 (or whatever it is now) for a full-blown drivers license, you can get an identification card from the MVA for only $10. And they’re forgetting about the “Motor Voter” law. When you get your drivers license, you just have to check off an extra box or two and *poof* you’re registered to vote… with no citizenship check!

I wrote about the “birth control to 11-year olds in Maine” thing a couple of weeks ago and mentioned that Baltimore City has been doing it for decades (even stooping so low as to implant Norplant in the 90’s). But there was no national outrage until it happened in Maine, a decidedly more rational state.

We need a new state motto. How about this?

Maryland: Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?
