That Old Familiar Face

I left for work at around 7am this morning. It wasn’t too cold, but was rainy and foggy. As I opened the door to my car, I heard a familiar sound.. it was the “bark” of a Red-bellied Woodpecker; a very welcome sound. Although most of the birds that I watch tend to hang out at my feeders year-round, the Red-bellied Woodpecker only comes around during the winter season.

I looked up at the Dogwood tree and saw him, beautiful as ever. This weekend will be my first counting weekend for Project Feederwatch. John and I have some work to do before the family arrives for Thanksgiving, but I’m hoping to get some bird watching time in now that the office is in the room that I typically watch from. How perfect — I can see the Dogwood from my desk now!

I also saw an Eastern Bluebird and a Northern Yellow-bellied Flicker this past weekend, which was a bit unusual. The only time I’ve ever seen them was in the spring time. Actually, the Flicker sighting was highly unusual because while I have seen it before, I’ve never seen it anywhere near the Dogwood.
