Raccoons in the Feeders: Part II

Raccoons strike again.  They love the nectar that I put in my hummingbird feeders.  When I use the ceramic feeders, they tear the corks up and drink the nectar out.  Now they’re chewing the flowers off of these cheap little feeders.  Not sure what to do except bring them inside every night.  What a pain.

I just picked the first rose of the season.  They’re a bit earlier this year than last; unfortunately there’s a bit of leaf fungus.  I’ll have to take care of that with some fungus killer tomorrow.  Still very pretty.

There is a wild bush over by the pool.  It grows tiny white flowers that don’t seem to do anything.  I finally identified it today — it is Rosa multiflora.  Wikipedia identifies it as an invasive asian species.  (Insert insensitive joke about Japanese invaders here.)  It’s pretty to look at, but it’s taking over half of the fence.  I pruned it back quite a bit.  I will let it live if it behaves; we’ll see.  Double bonus if it actually produces rose hips.  I’ll be keeping an eye out this year.  The first picture below is the bush as it looks now; the second is the enormous amount of stuff that I hacked off of it.
