Critters ‘n Gasoline n’ Other Stuff
We spent Father’s Day weekend with John’s parents. It was a nice weekend; pretty hot though. When we got back, my Gas Price Barameter (a family-owned non-branded service station), who had held their ground at $3.99 for weeks while every other station in town hit $4+, had hit $4.03 for a gallon of regular unleaded. There goes the neighborhood! But oddly enough, they were back down to $3.99 this evening. Maybe they’re trying to undercut everyone else.
John installed the new fan & motor in the heat exchanger on Saturday evening. It’s great to have a/c again — it got very warm inside on Saturday.
We spent some time out on the porch Sunday evening watching the hummingbirds. John heard a rustling sound from somewhere down below — it was a skunk shoving leaves into a drain pipe at the bottom of the driveway. The skunk disappeared from view for a while, and then suddenly reappeared about 15 feet from us next to the rose bushes. It gave a sniff in our general direction and then headed around the back side of the fence to the East 40. I’ve read that skunks will not bother you as long as they don’t feel threatened and have a way out. That’s definitely been my experience so far.
The hummingbirds were back out last night — three of them competing for the three feeders. One of these days they’ll figure out that there is plenty of food for everyone. But until then, the air battles are entertaining. We also got to see quite a lightning show off to the west. The storms passed just north-west of us. We got some rain, but no real lightning or thunder. Oh well.
My veggies are looking great. I have lots of tomatoes on the vines, and have already picked some green peppers. Nothing much in the way of squash or cucumbers yet, but I’m harvesting spinach every weekend, and should have some hot peppers soon too!
