Review: Mamma Mia!

A movie theatre is not typically the place where you would catch John and I, but we were actually there this weekend.  After a very long dry spell, it seems that Hollywood is finally starting to release some things that interest us.  So many, in fact, that we’re considering re-subscribing to Netflix.

We headed over to the local Regal theatre for a matinee showing of Mamma Mia! after a very light lunch at Pizza Blitz (they’ve got excellent NY Style pies).  In a word, the movie was EXCELLENT.  Given Mamma Mia!’s live stage show heritage, I was curious as to how well it would translate to the movie format.  It reminded me very much of another favorite of ours, Moulin Rouge.  Lots of song and dance that made me want to get up out of my seat and run down the aisle.  For those of you who are shaking your heads at me right now, I swear to you that the first performance of Dancing Queen really was that great — especially when they’re all running through the olive trees.

All of the parts were cast very well — except for one.  The producers were obviously looking for someone to play the “Handsom man with British accent” part, because they chose Pierce Brosnan.  Let’s face it — he’s the obvious choice.  The only problem is that judging by his performance, he can’t carry a tune in a bucket.  He blends into groups very well, but his solos were uncomfortable, bordering on painful.  At times, I was actually embarassed for him.  So, you’ve been warned; he plays the part perfectly, but don’t expect anything grand out of his voice.

The movie does contain a few sexual inuendos, some more overt than others; but other than that it’s a really fun and well-done movie.  One of the must-sees of the summer. 4.5 stars!
