Sleeping at the Switch
We got less than 1/2-inch of snow, but the state was still caught sleeping at the switch.
When I slid yesterday, it had been snowing for over 2 hours and the roads hadn’t been treated. In fact, the whole way home from my last shopping trip I never once saw a plow or salt truck. The first one I saw went down my street around 9pm.
John left work last night at 7:45 and was .5 mile from our exit on the highway by 8:30 only to find that it was at a standstill. He got to sit there until 11:30pm because all four lanes were closed for a combination of icing and an 8-car pileup. He says people were running out of gas, and the guy in front of him came to check John’s fuel status because he had kids in the car and was almost on empty and needed a place to go when he ran out. John says that at one point he tried driving on the shoulder of the road to get to the exit, but it was so icy that his truck was sliding around.
Seriously — how could they miss this radar? It started snowing in Frederick at 2pm; there should have been plenty of time to get the trucks on the road.
He finally got home around midnight and the driveway was icy enough that he couldn’t get the truck up to the top — he had to leave it at the bottom with the bumper right at the edge of the road. Unfortunately he had to get back up and out at 5am so that he could do the sound setup for our church. I felt so bad for him.
I’ll be going to the second service so that I can shovel snow this morning. Brrrrrrr.
