Adoption Thoughts and Flowers from My Sis
Thanks everyone for the emails and phone calls and Facebook messages. I’ve really appreciated your support. Friday was a very dark day for me. Saturday was like a light at the end of a long dark tunnel. I spent the day working outside getting ready for a pool party we’re having this coming weekend. I was scrubbing the fence around the pool nice and clean and got lots of quiet time to spend in my own head. I thought lots about adoption, and while I was out there these arrived:
My sister and her boyfriend sent me these beautiful flowers. The picture doesn’t quite do them justice; they really are gorgeous. Loved them, guys!!
Back to my head. I spent a lot of time thinking, and while Friday really hurt, I think I am ready to move on. I’ll be 34 next year, and I’m not getting any younger. All of our friends that are our age are done having their children; and many of them are going into school this year. We’re way behind.
Adoption is an amazing concept. I think that it is the closest earthly approximation that we have to how God grafts us into His heavenly family through our faith in Jesus Christ. He takes those of us who have no claim to His inheritance and gives us a full share of it as if we were His own. Here on earth we take a child who may have little chance in life and make them full members of a loving family with all of the benefits thereof; as if they had been born into that family from the very beginning. The more I thought about it the more I fell in love with the concept.
So here are a few of my random thoughts: I don’t know if we’ll adopt a boy or a girl (or boys or girls). I’d like to adopt two at once since the cost is the same but I’m not sure how happy John is with that idea. The idea of a multicultural family is appealing to me. I will want my children to always know how much we loved them before we ever had them and the great lengths to which we will go to bring them home; whether from here in Maryland or from a far away land.
My eyes are on the prize and I’m moving forward toward this great new adventure, wherever it takes us.
(BTW, Thanks to Neil and Pam for the crabs and margaritas on Friday night; it feelt good to get out of the house.)
