Blizzard 2009 – Part 1
We went out to Five Guys for burgers last night before driving around looking at Christmas lights. A bit after 10pm we decided that it was time to come home. Just as we were turning from Woodville Road onto Emerson Burrier Road at 10:30pm, “Christmas Time is Here” started to play on the radio and the first flakes started to fall. It didn’t start lightly, either — one second nothing, and then *wham*. By the time we got home (about 2 miles later), there was snow sticking to the road. We got the car parked at the bottom of the driveway and hauled the gas can up to the shed where we keep the generator. When we went to bed around 11pm, the ground was completely covered.
This morning, we woke up to this:

It’s really coming down now, and the forecasters say that the worst of it is coming during the day right up until around 6pm. They say that this could top the record 2-day December snow totals for both Washington, D.C. and Baltimore (set in 1932 and 1960). They also say that this snowfall will be in the top 10 of all time for both Baltimore and D.C. We had at least 8 inches out there when I measured about an hour ago, and the pace has really picked up — we’ve almost got “white out” conditions here now. Here’s what the current radar looks like:

But we’re happily snuggled away in the house watching it with the fireplace on and cats curled up on our laps. At some point John will probably head downstairs to work on the airplane, and I’m going to try to beat the last level of Dawn of Discovery. I’ve got beef and mushroom stew in a crockpot. I’m thinking popcorn and Christmas specials tonight.
